The Format Returns to the Stage at History Toronto: A Night Fans Won't Forget

There are shows you cover… and then there are moments you feel. Monday night at History in Toronto was the latter.

After years away, with frontman Nate Ruess himself openly calling his time in music "retired", seeing The Format back on stage felt surreal. And for fans packed into the venue, it was nothing short of emotional. 

From the first note, the energy in the room made it clear this wasn't just another tour stop. It was a reunion between a band and fans who never stopped listening. 

Even without a full house, the crowd that showed up brough everything. Every lyric echoed back to the stage, turning the night into something deeply personal. You could feel the appreciation on both sides, the band soaking it in, the fans holding onto every moment. 

The lighting throughout the set created a soft, almost cinematic atmosphere, a perfect match for The Format emotional, melodic sound. Warm tones and diffused beams, clean stage composition and just enough contrast to capture mood without overpowering the performance. 

The night opened with an intimate acoustic set from Adult Mom easing the crowd into the evening with a raw, stripped-back performance.

Following that, Ben Kweller brought a familiar energy to the stage, engaging, warm and effortlessly connecting with the audience. 

Catching The Format live in 2026 wasn't just about the music, it was about witnessing something that once felt unlikely.
